The origins of this show* are located in the personal history of the artist. Ramiro Gomez was born to immigrant parents in the Inland Empire region of Southern California, east of Los Angeles. After leaving the California Institute of the Arts, Gomez worked as a live-in nanny with a Beverly Hills family, where he keenly observed the relationships between heads of households and their staff. Gomez found the dynamic between family and staff to be paradoxical – at once intimate, trusting and close, but also prone to abrupt dissolution for various reasons. His experiences there were the impetus for the work in Domestic Scenes.

Why you should collect Ramiro Gomez:
In his imagery, the artist doesn’t show any anger against those people who hire the workers. It is very powerful. He shows to the world the facts, just as they are.The viewer does the active part of the thinking. Actually, the viewer can potentially be the employer of the gardener he is looking at, on the photography. It echoes the conditions he sets for his employees: gardener, nanny, housekeeper, handyman etc.. This is where the questions start, “Am I a good employer? Do I know the last name of my house keeper? What sort of family life she is living?” and so on. Those photographs, paintings and installations offers a meditation on class, deeper than it sounds at first glance when you look at the very nice imagery chosen by artist Ramiro Gomez.
That powerful level or political thoughts is served with an indubitable talent of the artist. Gomez paintings are very good in the execution, composition and palette. The photographs with the addition of painting are excellent. The installations of the cardboard silhouettes in a landscape are very good. And we feel behind some more ideas ready to come out.
Great art, great topic, great potential indeed for artist Ramiro Gomez.
