Fred Michiels: the quintessence of Freedom
Fred Michiels is an artist from Belgium, homeland of so many prestigious artists such as Jan Van Eyck, Bruegel, Rubens, Paul Delvaux, René Magritte, Michael Borremans or Alechinsky.
Michiels found the right bias to paint his own part by choosing a technique that would fit his inspiration, not the opposite. It can be oil or watercolor, thick or thin, on paper, on canvas, on cardboard, on books, on notebooks, on whatever he finds to serve his purpose. His only constraint doesn’t come from the technique but from the choice of… a good cigar ; almost every time a new flavor, a new brand, a new sensation. This is how Michiels works, and thinks his paintings
He works a lot to try things, and to keep a Free gesture.
When looking at his incredible body of work, anyone understand he has processed some sort of digestion of that history of art of the Old Europe.
His art is now free, with a new vocabulary of color mix with a free gesture. This is what Belgium Artist, Fred Michiels is able to achieve, with no boundaries or strings attached.
