“Pattern Structures” by Samantha Bittman
September 12 – October 10, 2015
‘Pattern Structures’is the first solo exhibition in Colorado for Chicago based artist Samantha Bittman’s. Bittman’s hand-woven abstract paintings arrive out of repetitive numerical data that she uses to create woven patterns that are sometimes altered or flattened with acrylic. These works challenge conventional readings of textiles and painting; Bittman stretches her small-scale weavings onto traditional painting stretcher bars, forcing the viewer to consider the surface and pictorial quality of the weaving. Often this stretching of the textile creates a slight distortion, which is further emphasized or negated with paint.
