EXHIBITION: Ode Bertrand at Galerie Cour Carrée
“Works on Paper Series”
October 14th – November 14th, 2015
@ Galerie Cour Carrée

Ode Bertrand was born in 1930. She lives and works in Paris. What if I tell you she was the niece and assistant of Aurelie Nemours? It gives certainly a good starting point to understand the origins of the extraordinary body of works by Ode Bertrand.
The golden ratio is the base of her rigorous abstract geometric artwork. Most of her paintings have a white background with black lines that cross the canvas. At first glance, the painting is all about geometric, lines and balance between the black and white. And, when you pay close attention, those lines express a language and try to tell the viewer something he has to find out.
Sometimes many very thin lines cover the whole canvas like showing to the viewer the big picture of the world by Ode Bertrand.
Sometimes the black lines are bigger on the canvas as if they were a magnification, a detail of broader scale previously mentioned. On these close-ups the artist traces lines like philosophers do with words when they write essays. And like for any essay in philosophy, the viewer has to understand the specific language described here to reach another level of acknowledgement. Brilliant.
Gallerist, Remy Mathiot is one of a kind gallerist who believes in Artists that are not in the top Ten at Christie’s but to my opinion they are so consistent, so good. Thank you Mr Mathiot.
